ABSTRACT

Analogue recording and replay using tape and disc are both relatively simple - after all, magnetic recording has been in existence for over 50 years and disc recording has been around for a century so techniques developed as long ago as that are not likely to be very complicated. This chapter deals with the two main methods of recording onto magnetic tape and then look at compact discs (CD) with a final glance at other and more recent developments. The problem with recording or replaying using magnetic tape for digital audio is the writing speed - the speed with which the tape moves past the heads. In many ways the MiniDisk uses CD technology in that the audio is converted into digits in much the same way and the 1 s and Os are recorded on the disc.
