ABSTRACT
Formal professional training for many of the jobs in the arts is relatively new. Musicians, dancers and singers require clearly identifiable skills which a traditional educational system is able to devise ways of teaching. However, an objective assessment of acting skills is rather more difficult. This is presumably the main reason, apart from the actor's rather late acquisition of respectability, why drama schools are more recent establishments than academies of music, ballet, architecture and fine art.
