It would have been as ridiculous to write about CEE and to ignore Russia as to write about moonlight without acknowledging the sun’s contributions to it. The analogy isn’t exactly apt, since what the Soviets brought to the countries it annexed mostly was darkness and the destruction of cultures. Individual entrepreneurship, intellect, craftsmanship, and self-esteem were also crushed.
