Low energy design
Improving energy efficiency is one of the most cost-effective ways of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Energy use is the dominant source of greenhouse gas emissions, with 55% of total emissions generated by the combustion of fuels to provide stationary energy. Global output of CO2 is expected to increase by 70% by 2020 compared to 1995 levels and energy levels will rise by 65% in the same period if no mitigating actions are taken. Ninety-five percent of that CO2 will come from fossil fuel usage (Lardner, 1998).
