Irregular Inanimate Objects If an irregular shaped object is falling or being thrown through the air, the movement of its center of gravity along a parabola can be timed. As most objects have a tendency to rotate when fl ying through the air, the object is then drawn pivoting by a fi xed amount about the successive positions of the center of gravity along the parabola. For example, with a heavy hammer most of the weight is in the metal head and the center of gravity is therefore close to this end. This would produce successive positions of the hammer as in the illustration (Fig. A). The shape of the hammer and the speed and direction of rotation might vary but the principle of movement remains the same.
