Basic editing part 1

The default Composer window gives you large monitors, one row of buttons on each side (for common editing commands) and one row of information above the monitors (such as clip name and T/c readers).

To change the display, click on ‘Settings’ in the Project window and double-click on the word Composer. Here we can choose more or fewer buttons, more or less information, and can control other things, such as how the FF and REW buttons work. Figure 5.2 shows the Window tabs in the Composer setting on Media Composer v10 and Symphony v3; earlier versions had all the choices in one large window. For those starting out on Avid, it is worth selecting both rows of buttons, and the option ‘Center Duration’. This displays the offset between the In and Out marks as you work.
