ABSTRACT
Electronic mail was one of the main reasons for the rapid growth of the Internet. The ability to send messages in text format all over the world has its appeal to the business community, the military establishment and academic centres. Once again, what no one appreciated was how rapidly this capability would be taken up and embraced by the computer community at large.
