ABSTRACT
We have seen that the confusing, numerical, addresses by which computers identify each other have be “humanised” is some way. The most straightforward way was to use a simple name for the computer. This is the method used by the NetBIOS system. This NetBIOS name, although simple, is based around an underlying process which is quite inefficient – especially for larger networks. We need to have another scheme that works better for these larger systems.
