ABSTRACT

We could integrate our FTP server into our corporate network and use this to allow users to connect to us. A typical way in which this might be done is shown in Figure 5.1.

Users could now connect to our server by accessing the machine ftp.sportsco.com. This would connect them to our server. In this book when we talk about a “server” we simply mean a computer that offers part of its resources to other computers on the network. These resources can be files, folders (or directories), printers or other parts of the computer system. The network can be a small local one or a larger network such as the Internet. In the above example this connection could be made by using the Web browser or by a command-line interface. This latter option is becoming increasingly rare as more and more users utilize the flexibility and ease of use of the Web browser.
