ABSTRACT

Satellites and uplink earth stations continue to be subject to technical regulation. Its purpose is to prevent or minimize interference between satellites, between satellites and microwave systems, and between users of the same satellite. It is also intended to maximize the usage of the spectrum. The distribution of programs to cable TV systems was the first major use of satellites by the television industry; and cable program suppliers continue to be one of the largest markets for satellite services. It is a synergistic relationship because satellite program distribution is responsible for the extraordinary growth of the cable TV industry. In the pre-satellite era, the programming for cable TV systems was limited to off-the-air pickups from nearby broadcast stations and to programs imported by microwave from more distant stations. Basic services are provided by cable TV systems to their subscribers for a flat monthly fee. They include both off-the-air broadcast programs and programs distributed by satellite.
