Soil organic matter

Organic matter can be approximately determined by measuring the organic carbon content of sieved soil. Organic matter itself ranges from 40-60 per cent carbon. When the soil is heated the organic matter burns away (loss on ignition). The mineral fraction is unaffected by the heat, the change in weight therefore approximates to the organic matter content.
