ABSTRACT
The tissue within the seed is adapted to ensure that the embryo plant will emerge at a time to ensure maximum favourability for growth and development. For example, the tough testa seed coat prevents germination until it is broken down by the harsh winter climate. Germination is
therefore prevented until the environmental conditions of spring are suitable.
