ABSTRACT

Intersections, where two or more roads meet, are points of potential vehicle conflict. The dangers to pedestrians and riders of two-wheeled vehicles are also great at intersections. On heavily travelled rural and urban roads, the concentration of vehicles at an intersection can be of such import that it controls a road's/road network's capacity. Consequently, maximising road user safety and ensuring that the available capacity adequately meets operational traffic-flow needs are the two key considerations when designing an intersection.
