ABSTRACT

Two types of armor were made for the Pippin production: breastplates for the Chorus and a set of full armor for Pippin. They were made from small plastic laundry baskets.

THE CHORUS’S BREASTPLATES

PROCEDURES FOR MAKING THE CHORUS’S BREASTPLATES

• Round-shaped laundry baskets • Marker • Steamer baskets (for the female

breastsplates) • Gold tie wire • Needle • Fishing line • Pliers • Tin snips • Eggbeater (whisk part)

• Magna-Tac clear glue, 809 permanent adhesive

• Dremel tools (Figure 18-1a) • Heat gun or stove • Black plastic spray paints • 1″-wide black elastic strips • Small buckles • 1/2″-wide black elastic strips • Silver metallic paints • Paint brushes

Step One: Cutting the Laundry Baskets

• Outline the shape of the breastplate on a laundry basket with a marker (Figure 18-1b). The size of the breastplate is based on the actor’s chest and waist measurements. Use the natural pattern on the laundry baskets to determine the sizes of the plates. Keep an extra warp (see Figure 18-2) on each side at the bottom of the basket for the larger breastplates. Cut the laundry basket following the markings with tin snips or a dremal cutter (Figure 18-1b).
