ABSTRACT
Towards the end of the Second World War, Dr Eric Berne was responsible for signing the discharge papers of thousands of American sailors. One of his duties was to decide whether each of them was of ‘sound mind’. Years later he used his experiences to develop a theory, now known as transactional analysis (TA), which is used today by psychoanalysts to shed light on the way people feel and behave.
