ABSTRACT

Preceding chapters have demonstrated the need to generate and retain accident (and ill health) data for a variety of purposes. Aside from the regulatory and legal imperatives to record details of individual accidents, diseases and dangerous occurrences, all organisations need to have databases of information which are accessible for maintaining the integrity of the overall safety management system. As we have seen with POPIMAR model (see here) performance measurement is a key element of these systems, and evidence of performance would be deficient if it failed to include all events where the system has failed. Accident data is also relevant though to other elements of these systems – for reviewing overall performance, for auditing and for planning improvement strategies.
