■ Understand the developments in theories of strategy and how these emphasize the importance of efficient internal processes such as SHRM within sport organizations
■ Describe a model of SHRM and identify the key elements of SHRM’s good practice

Chapter overview The main elements of HRM were described in Chapter 1 using the
Theories of strategy The classic view of strategic management presents the ‘process’ as involving six steps. These are as follows:
1. Clarification of corporate mission, goals, and values. 2. Analysis of the organization’s external competitive environment to iden-
tify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (a SWOT analysis – described in detail below).
