ABSTRACT

If you are reading these pages you probably already have some basic experience of either composing or sequencing (or maybe both). The purpose of this chapter is to ensure that you are up to speed with some of the key concepts and techniques that are needed in order to learn advanced orchestration and MIDI production procedures. In this chapter we will brush up on the concept of MIDI, audio, and MIDI network, then review a detailed description of MIDI messages, studio setup, and more. After covering the technical part of the production process we will focus on the main principles on which orchestration, arranging, and composition are based. You will become familiar with such concepts as range, register, overtone series, transposition, balance and intensity, and many others. These are all crucial and indispensable concepts that you will use to achieve coherent and credible MIDI productions.
