The FDD makes use of thin plastic 3.5 inch magnetic disks with a cap acity of around 1.4 Mb. The use of a fl oppy drive is essential on older machines because it allowed a computer to be commissioned with a new unformatted hard drive. On these machines, a system fl oppy, usually included with a copy of Windows for OEM (original equipment manufacturer) use, contains the MS-DOS command fi les along with drivers for CD-ROM drives, allowing you to format a hard drive, copy fi les to it and make the CD-ROM drive available for installing Windows. On modern machines, this commissioning can all be done using a CD-ROM.
