Essentially anyone who holds a right, regardless of whether they are a proprietor, leaseholder, promoter or organizer, is free to allocate a commercial naming right for their stadium, event, tournament or league. In reality however, through frequency of use, the following forms have become accepted, namely the option to market the name of:

• Arenas and stadiums • Teams (cycling/motor sports) • Events (golf/tennis) • Clubs (basketball) • Series (alpine ski World Cup) • Leagues (football, basketball) • Track sections (motor racing).
