ABSTRACT

The solution of many workplace environmental problems, whether due to the presence of airborne pollutants such as dust, gases or vapours, or due to an uncomfortable or stressful thermal environment, lies in the field of ventilation. Ventilation can be employed in three ways:

1 By using extraction as close to the source of pollution as possible to minimise the escape of the pollutant into the atmosphere. The extraction devices can be either hoods, slots, enclosures or fume cupboards coupled to a system of ducts, fans and air cleaners.
