ABSTRACT

The answer to affordable sustainable heating is not roofmounted wind turbines and ground-source heat pumps for the few. This is equivalent to trying to fill a bath with the plug out. At least in the first instance, the answer lies in quality passive design and attention to detail in all housing. Much can be achieved during the early stages of new design development, but opportunities abound in existing buildings. Indeed, these are vitally important if we are to limit energy consumption to sustainable levels.
