ABSTRACT

The process of controlling keys for security purposes to ensure that all keys are accounted for at all times. In the past, the concept of key control usually related to a metal key. Today, most hotels in the developed countries have moved away from metal keys and use electronic guestroom access cards. However, there are sufficient metal keys in many other countries, in small hotels and in the 'back-of-the-house' operations to give special consideration to this area of security controls. Good security practices requires that keys should not have any identification of the property or the room of the facility controlled by the key. Coding has been successfully used to assist in such control.
