ABSTRACT

At the conceptual level, the entire topic of rasterization is simply an implementation detail. Rasterization is required because the display devices we use today are based on a dense rectangular grid of light-emitting elements, or pixels (a short version of the term “picture elements”), each of whose colors and intensities are individually adjustable in every frame. For historical reasons relating to the way that picture tube-based televisions work, these displays are called raster displays.
