Kyle Cooper's groundbreaking opening credits to the movie Se7en (1995) incorporate scratched, hand-drawn letter forms that nervously jump around on the screen to the soundtrack by Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails), as close-up shots of instruments of torture (scissors, trays, and tape) flash before the audience's eyes. Profane words appear in conjunction with biblical, nihilistic images to contribute to the mood of dementia and cold, calculated precision. When the negative was sent out for processing, the lab was told that pieces of film leader and twisted film were part of the finished product.
