ABSTRACT

Blurring is an advanced technique used in a lot of manga to indicate speed and motion. It’s not something one can accomplish with one click, though. Blurring in Manga Studio is a bit more involved than that. Here’s a bit about how blurring works, and then here’s how to pull it off in Manga Studio. There are several cases where speed lines won’t do the job for showing motion. One really need to show an object is moving fast, and speed lines aren’t making it seem fast enough. They could try drawing the speed lines over the object, but this tends to obscure it and clutter the panel. Or, the background is really necessary in a certain panel where an object is moving fast. Blurring is a neat trick that can really jazz up a fast moving scene. It is also a technique best used in extreme moderation. Excessive blurring is discomforting.
