ABSTRACT

All the planning, storyboarding, and previsualization that occur during preproduction are translated into a finished product during production by the camera. The camera is the tool through which the director realizes the script. The mobile camera does not inhibit the actor's freedom of movement. The camera is choreographed into the process, allowing for more organic ideas to emerge. The director of photography (DP) heads the camera team and is responsible for translating those ideas and creating the look and feel of the story. The DP and the key grip are in charge of moving the camera. For the videomaker, videotape stock or tapeless formats have no inherent visual qualities. It is the camera's pickup tube or its charge-coupled device that determines the sensitivity to light and color. The camera pans back and forth with the frantic woman, revealing to the audience that her bags and her salad had actually been in the next booth all along.
