ABSTRACT

This chapter identifies the sound team, their tools, and how they should optimally function on the production of a narrative or documentary project. Digital sound reproduction has drastically changed the way audiences hear soundtracks in theaters. Most professional video productions record sound "double system", sending the production mix to the camera for a guide track at picture editing. Production sound consists of dialogue, the natural sounds associated with each scene, and any other sounds that might be of value during the postproduction process. Crew members may not spend the extra time on the set to get the sound right because they know that dialogue can be replaced later with a process called automated dialogue replacement or automatic dialogue replacement. Shooting in sound-friendly locations is especially important for documentaries. The production sound mixer's goal is to record sound consistently from shot to shot. The production sound mixer can give direction and speak to the boom operator through the headphones.
