ABSTRACT

The crew represents the nuts and bolts of the production machine. Crew members who can be creative and inventive under pressure while maintaining a sense of humor are worth the search. Crew members not only need to be present for the duration of the shoot, but they also need time to prepare. The only exception to this is if a crew member is hired to perform a specialty job, such as prosthetic makeup, an explosion, or the operation of a second unit camera. Documentary crews are small and compact by nature. They must be able to move quickly in and out of confined spaces. The production designer works closely with the director and the Director of Photography to design the total look and feel of the film, and the art director executes it. There are many other crew members who cover specialty areas. They include special effects, choreography, standby painters, Steadicam operators, greens people, animal wranglers, tutors, and stunt coordinators.
