ABSTRACT
This chapter is an introduction to the rest of the book, and is a “bridge” chapter within this otherwise technology oriented Part 4.
When electric light became generally available people were glad enough to have light, without fussing too much about appearances. But it was soon realized that the quality of electric light could be greatly improved by diffusing the light, eliminating glare, and making attractive luminaires.
