ABSTRACT

Process When rst beginning any new painting, the most important step to think about is the initial lay-in (Fig.01). I personally like to start with a grayscale underpainting in order to focus only on value relationships and overall lighting schemes. This step can be overlooked and rushed at times, mostly due to an artist’s excitement to progress towards the nished stages as quickly as possible. But to me, this stage is the most critical, as all artistic decisions will be based on the foundation that I’ve created.
