ABSTRACT

This chapter presents frequently asked questions, addressing the most common concerns in postproduction sound. The questions are about technical issues of distortion or noise in unmixed tracks. Many sound problems can't be resolved in a couple of sentences. The chapter details the techniques professionals use to improve marginal sounds, and to make well-recorded ones jump out of the speakers. It deals with mix and compatibility issues, computer behavior, and lipsync. Some software gives a way to scale or boost the display, to make editing easier. Most editing systems are programmed with linear waveform displays. If audio is so loud that waveforms extend from top to bottom of a clip window, it probably also sounds distorted or has a crackling noise at the loudest spots. Certain kinds of distortion can be made less offensive with equalization. The chapter also discusses different problems, such as noise, thin sound, or boominess.
