ABSTRACT

Safety Base Films Very early cellulose nitrate fi lm bases were highly fl ammable. Frequent fi res occurred where large amounts of fi lm were stored, such as movie theaters and X-ray fi lms in hospitals. The Eastman Kodak Company developed a nonfl ammable cellulose acetate safety fi lm very early in the 1900s, but it was not accepted by the motion picture industry because of cost; and some of the other physical characteristics, such as wear on repeated showings, were not as good as those of the nitrate fi lm. With more experience and further research and development, improved versions of acetate fi lms were produced, and they are still the best support for commercial motion picture fi lm.
