The legendary quiz show scandals of the mid-1950s resulted from the discovery
that several game shows were rigged by producers in order to heighten drama
and predetermine the outcome. In the wake of the scandal, which President
Dwight D. Eisenhower called “a terrible thing to do to the American people,”
Congress enacted legislation prohibiting the rigging of game shows.
