ABSTRACT

The measurement of existing buildings is carried out for various reasons. As in plane-survey work, the amount of detail necessary and the degree of accuracy to be achieved must be determined in the light of the purpose for which the survey is required. Besides the ‘work’ aspect, the drawing of measured work has long been recognised as the best form of instruction in the principles of detail and design. Drawings made from one’s own sketches and measurements are more valuable, from an educational point of view, than those of the same subject by others, and immense satisfaction as well as knowledge is to be gained by carrying out the whole process from first look to final drawing.
