ABSTRACT
It must be said immediately that, although it contains a distress function, this system does not meet the rigid criteria set by the IMO for operation within the GMDSS. This factor is particularly important when considering a new maritime installation. However, the system has been included in this book because it is new, it exists and it is possible that its parameters will, at some time in the future, satisfy the IMO criteria for GMDSS satellite communications.
