ABSTRACT

INCIDENCE Many people associate damp patches on walls with penetrating or rising damp. In fact, most dampness is probably caused by condensation. Unfortunately, for some of those involved in the inspection and maintenance of buildings condensation is a baffling problem. It is compounded by the fact that, in some cases, condensation may be exacerbated by problems of rising or penetrating damp. This chapter explains the phenomenon of condensation and describes how, when and where it can occur. Failure to understand its nature can lead to incorrect diagnosis of damp problems resulting, in many cases, in waster effort and wasted resources.
