ABSTRACT

Frequently, much level land is clay based and thus heavy and often water-logged. Potatoes and sugar beet cannot be satisfactorily grown on heavy land because they cannot always be harvested in the wet conditions experienced in the autumn. Similarly, it may sometimes prove difficult to plant such land with autumn sown cereals. This type of soil usually has a high water table, but in dry conditions tends to dry out very quickly and large cracks develop. Examples of this soil are to be found extensively in Worcestershire and also the Severn Vale in Gloucestershire. This soil is also cold and late in the spring.
