ABSTRACT

Together with planting, the hard surface of floorscape treatments of pathways, patios, piazzas, etc., will often register as a positive and detailed element of landscape and site plans. For instance, walkways are often shown with delineated modules to illustrate both the makeup of their surface and the pattern of circulation systems within the site. When not fully drawn, hard floorscape areas can be hinted at--either by selectively drawing areas of joints around their perimeter, or by detailing exclusively within the areas of shadow projected from adjacent wall planes. In simultaneously fulfilling two graphic roles, the latter technique is both economical and convincing. However, as with all graphic depictions of surface materials, a conviction begins with a working knowledge of the different pattern-making options as well as how the individual units fit within the overall pattern and how they form edges.
