The study of bones is called osteology. Bones can be likened to the woodwork of a primitive cottage providing the body with its basic shape. This framework of bones is called the skeleton (Figure 6.1). The skeleton is divided into an axial part consisting of the bones of the head and trunk, and an appendicular part consisting of the bones of the limbs, or extremities (arms and legs).
