ABSTRACT

An impairment - whether sensory, mental or physical - restricts an individual in executing some skills, performing tasks or participating in certain activities or movements. It is estimated that six million of the British population have some form of impairment, including paraplegics, blind and partially-sighted, people with cerebral palsy, deaf and/or dumb people, autistic people, those who have survived polio, diabetes, multiple sclerosis or a birth defect. This translates into a range of different sensory, physical or mental problems: 5% are wheelchair users, 55% have mental impairment, 20% have sensory impairment, and 20% are ambulatory but with physical impairment.
