ABSTRACT
Few words in the language are as ambivalent as ‘work’, or as emotion-laden. In the pairing ‘work and rest,’ ‘rest’ is clearly good. But whether ‘retirement’ is better than ‘work’ is already questionable. And work is definitely preferable to ‘idleness’. Being ‘out of work’ is far from good – is, indeed, a catastrophe.
