ABSTRACT

Internet, the main search engines Some search engines have information (called a directory) organized by humans, others have information organized by computers. The second kind uses software (called a spider, robot or crawler) to look at each page on a website, extract the information and build an index. It is this index you search when using the search engine. Some people make a clear distinction between a directory and a search engine. Currently, the situation is not clear cut as many ‘search engines’ in fact use both methods.
