ABSTRACT
Because the influence of materials and structures upon almost every aspect of our lives is so great, the fact that we now at last understand, pretty well, how materials work and have some idea of how to invent new ones, is important indeed. So far the implications of this new knowledge have not been sufficiently widely appreciated.
