ABSTRACT

In order to fully develop new products or modify existing ones, engineers need to be familiar with a wide range of materials, manufacturing processes and techniques. As they study this unit, students will examine the properties of a range of common engineering materials and their suitability for various applications. They will look at the way materials can be shaped into components for use in products, such as by machining or by moulding. They will also learn how different materials can be joined together to manufacture high quality finished products. The unit is assessed through a written examination which is set and marked by Edexcel. The examination is of 1.5 hour duration and will be based on one or more common engineered products. These will provide opportunities for students to answer questions about the choice and application of particular materials, joining techniques and processing methods in the context of a specific product and application. It is important to note that students are not expected to have actual knowledge of the product(s) in order to be able to answer the questions in the examination.
