11 Standing wave ratio

Matching a source (such as a transmitter) to a

load (such as an aerial) is an important

consideration because it allows the maximum

transfer of power from one to the other. Ideally,

a feeder should present a perfect match between

the impedance of the source and the impedance

of the load. Unfortunately this is seldom the

case and all too often there is some degree of

mismatch present. This section explains the

consequences of mismatching a source to a load

and describes how the effect of a mismatch can

be quantified in terms of standing wave ratio

(SWR).
