ABSTRACT

The specifi c characteristic of the water of this spa is the high rate of the hydrogen sulphide ratio (173.2 mg/l), making them extremely benefi cial. The water also contains a very rare alga, which enriches the mud baths with proteins and vitamins. Thanks to the proximity to the coast and to the various and complex morphology of the land, the Luigiane thermal baths perfectly fi t into a local tourist system. This system is built up not only by tourist elements but also by other numerous factors such as the social and economic context, the natural and cultural environment, and by factors of anthropic attraction. Nearby the baths, lies the National Park of Pollino and the Sanctuary of San Francesco of Paola (XII century) is only a few kilometres away. All along the coast, many towers, fortifi cations and castles of Aragon, Norman, and Bourbon origins can be seen. In addition, Guardia Piemontese claims the unique Occitan community in Calabria which still preserves its own costumes and its ancient language of Provençal origin.
