ABSTRACT

In this chapter the term ‘repair’ is taken to mean an activity which involves

the removing or cleaning of defective building materials which are then

replaced and protected in a suitable way. It may also include some decorative

enhancement to restore the appearance of the bridge. Repair works generally

add no extra strength to the bridge structure, but are merely curative

measures taken to restore the serviceability of the bridge – rather like taking

out decayed matter in a tooth and replacing it with an amalgam filling

followed by a ‘brush and clean’.
