Deterioration modelling

The deterioration of a bridge is a complex phenomenon which occurs during

the working life of the bridge. The degradation process may be slow and

unseen, but nevertheless it continues inexorably onwards, and if not

checked, the materials of the bridge will erode to such an extent that failure

ensues (witness the Ynys-y-Gwas Bridge, section 2.3.1.2).
