ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the controversial methodology of deconstruction –

which many critics claim is not a legitimate methodology. Deconstruction

seeks to locate and identify multiple interpretations within texts and to then

dislocate the dominant discourse by examining the language and structure of

the text – by what has been selected, and not selected, to create the structure.

In sport management literature, deconstruction can facilitate further schol-

arly discussion by challenging the legitimacy and validity of those precepts

and ideas generally accepted within the sport management academic

community to be irrefutable. This chapter will provide an introduction and

overview to the concept of deconstruction and provide some suggestions as to

possible frameworks from which to start the process of deconstruction in the

reading of sport management literature.
